🐦 Bird Flu Update: What You Should Know

Avian influenza (bird flu) virus mostly infects birds, but in rare cases, it can spread to people. Human infections have ranged from mild (like eye or respiratory issues) to severe illness, including pneumonia and, in some cases, death.

Most human cases have happened after close, unprotected contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces. Very rarely, the virus has spread from animals like cats or cows to people. Person-to-person transmission is extremely rare and has not led to ongoing spread.

Right now, the H5 strain of bird fluĀ is spreading among wild birds, U.S. poultry, and dairy cows. A few recent human casesĀ have been reported in U.S. farm workers. The CDC says the current risk to the public is lowĀ but they are watching the situation closely.
